Colorado Auto Insurance Requirements

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

I live in Fort Collins, Colorado and I need to purchase auto insurance.  I have always been on my parent’s policy, so I’m not really sure how to do it.  How do I know how much coverage I need to purchase?

Purchasing auto insurance is a fairly simple process.  First you will need to decide if you want basic liability insurance or full coverage. Liability insurance provides coverage for other vehicles/people/property that you damage in an accident. It does not cover any damages to your vehicle.  Full coverage insurance covers both your vehicle and other vehicles/people/property damaged in an accident.

The state minimum liability auto insurance requirements in Colorado are:

  • $25,000―per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000―per accident for bodily injury
  • $15,000―per accident for property damage

These are just the minimum coverage amounts required by law.  You can purchase additional coverage and higher coverage amounts if you would like to. I would recommend comparing quotes from as many different insurance providers as possible. This will help you find the cheapest auto insurance possible.
